How do you choose a lawyer? 4 things to look for, 5 questions to ask.
Look for:
- Experience in the area(s) or practice in which you need their help. Look at their website to learn their areas of specialization.
- A small to medium sized firm. Very large firms can feel remote and impersonal. You can feel lost. They also can cost more because they have more overhead in rent, oriental rugs, etc.
- Long, relevant experience. A long-running firm indicates stability and expertise.
- Good presentation and ethic. Do you feel confident in their skills? Do you feel comfortable with their values and presentation?
Ask:
- What is their experience in the area in which you need their help?
- What do they charge for an initial consultation? What is their hourly rate?
- If relevant, will you handle this case on a contingency basis?
- How long do you expect this matter to take?
- How can I reach you most easily?
- How long should I expect to wait to hear back from you?
